Experience with groups 3 and 4 (Juan Ledezma)

My experience as one of the group managers
(Group 3 & 4)

Since the assignment came up, I was very excited to work with the people in groups 3 & 4. I saw this group assignment as a challenge, since I've never really overlooked other people's work. Nonetheless, what happened during the assignment process was completely unexpected.

Firstly, one of the groups had some un-updated roster, so there was a lot of confusion at first on who would do what for group 3. A lot of people in the group didn't really have a time set for when they would start working. After a day passed, I had given the roles of group leader and slide designer to Ginan Reda (Group Leader) and Irene Benedetti (Slide Designer), and that would completely help with the organization inside the groupchat.

At the start of their Google Slides, they started putting all of the chapters they were covering, and it would all start to click. It was certainly surprising since the first few days of the project being assigned, it was all chaos for both groups.

Looking at the progress all of my peers were making made me really anxious for us to present the project. But the nerves were good nerves; I just wanted to get the presentation over with since I've never really had a role like group manager before. It would be a first-time experience and something that really made me open up towards public speaking.

When the time came for the presentation, group 3 presented all the chapters they were assigned. They were assigned Chapter 9-12. The first person is Roberto Fresneda, in chapter 9, talking about "Beginning and Ending your Speech," which talks about how effective introductions and conclusions shape audience attention and memory. Using attention grabbers, clear purpose statements, and early credibility helps make a speech more engaging and trustworthy. The way he presented his slides was really clear and concrete. He was very confident when presenting, which set the mood and also gave confidence to the other members.

The next chapter was Chapter 10, "Using Language Effectively", which was presented by Roger Donado and Irene Benedetti. This chapter was mostly about how effective language strengthens persuasion by appealing to emotions and cultural understanding, and how choosing meaningful words and speaking dynamically helps speakers connect better with their audience. Roger and Irene worked really hard due to the fact that when the project was assigned, they had some confusion about which person would do what, since I believe it was their first time doing a presentation with two people presenting the same subject and also sharing the same slides. Thankfully, Irene helped with her designer skills.

Nextly, Chapter 11 "Integrating Presentation Media", which was presented by Ginan Reda and Giuliana Armijo, my classmates, really worked well with each other. I believe that Ginan (Group Leader) chose Giuliana because they knew each other from before the project was assigned, which really helped in their chemistry during the presentation, and very concrete when making their statements and talking about the information inside the chapter. The chapter was really about how to use presentation media to support and enhance a speech rather than distract from it. When they presented, the slides were really well organized, and they had a perfect speech. In my opinion, they both did an amazing job.

And to close off the odyssey that has been with group 3, Chapter 12, "Delivering Your Speech," was presented by Milca Mangnant. She had a very well-delivered speech when presenting. It was a pleasure working with her. The chapter explained delivery methods, vocal control, and body language. And I believe that Milca really took the information from her chapter to heart; she showed all of the skills talked about in her chapter during her presentation.

After the presentation, group 4 had some trouble that came up out of the blue. One of the members had either left the class at the time or just didn't show up, and I didn't know at the time I was doing their introductions and conclusions. The group had been assigned Chapters 13, 14, 15, and 16. And the members were Rosniel Gonzalez, Yubisleydis Cordova, Yordanis Sierra, Sofia Sanchez, Syreena Raphael, and Sebastian Vitier. Looking back at the time when we presented, I should've realized that a person would be missing since they hadn't collaborated with the group, and shared any information or ideas.

Either way, we had to improvise with the situation we were put in by faith. The presentation had started, and it started with Rosniel and Yubisleydis presenting Chapter 13, "Informative Speaking". When they presented, Rosniel started it off (He was appointed Group Leader, for the huge amounts of effort he had put into the project, and he had the most dedication towards the project.). He talked about how this chapter explains that you can explain something so that others are able to understand it better. Referring to the information inside the chapter, and after that, Yubisleydis stated that when you give an informative speech, you take information and explain it in a clear way, so it makes sense to the audience. He delivered more information as the presentation went on, concisely, while she was mostly keeping the tempo of the speech made by  Rosniel, which helped him design their presentation.

The following chapter was Chapter 14 "Persuasive Speaking", which was presented by Yordanis, and he covered this in the chapter, explaining how speakers try to influence the audience's beliefs, attitudes, or actions. When he presented this, the explanations he brought to the presentation were really accurate, and the images he showed in the presentation connected with me as a presenter and an audience member. He truly shone during his speech, and I believe he did a great job.

Chapter 15, "Understanding Argument," was presented by two of my fellow classmates, Sofia and Syreena. They presented a very important chapter, and I believe it to be one of the most important ones in all of the projects presented. This chapter explains how arguments are built using claims, evidence, and reasoning. It also teaches different types of reasoning and how to avoid logical fallacies to make arguments stronger. The words they used were very precise and very understandable.

Lastly, Chapter 16 "Distance Speaking and Media Appearances" by Sebastian (Slide designer), when Sebastian showed me the slides for the presentation, I was stunned. I couldn't believe how organized his presentation was and how well structured everything was. After seeing his rough draft and where he was going with it, I asked the members if I could appoint Sebastian as the slide designer for the group, which they agreed to. Sebastian took chapter 16 and explained how speakers communicate effectively through technology and media platforms, explaining some key points that even through a screen, you could do a very good speech and/or presentation.

My overall thought about this entire process was excitement; I couldn't wait to get to work alongside some of my classmates. And I was proud of the final result, even though there were ups and downs along the way; we not only managed to present everything on time, but we also did pretty well as a team and as a group.
